You're not sure what to think at this point. Essay? Project? What is it going to be? The teacher walks around with a deck of cards. Clubs or Hearts get the essay. Diamonds or Spades get the project...

The more confident students will love the game aspect of this approach. Assuming that there is a solid rationale for splitting the students in this way, they will typically have fun with it. In our research, the mechanism used to select which students would do the essay and which would do the project was more about student choice and all students understood that it was important that they write a senior level paper and to get some experience telling their stories in different ways.

The less confident students - and confidence can relate to ability or simply how overworked they might feel - can be terrifed by not knowing or not having control of any aspect of the situation.
